My experience has been that they are helping her build a vocabulary sooner that comparable 18 month olds. As for the *research* findings..unfortunately you can never reach a consensus just as in *research* about whether coffee/alcohol/butter/margarine/sweetener/sugar is good for you..every other year there is a complete turn around in the conclusion.
I think its a personal decision, whether you use these dvd's or not. I use them as an aid rather than a substitute for my attention, and your observation about using TV as a babysitter is certainly correct. At the end of the day, you still need to invest as much time in your child's development.
